If you have gas central heating, your boiler will account for around 60% of your home's CO2 emissions, according to the Energy Saving Trust. This makes your choice of boiler a key priority if you're looking to cut your energy bills and carbon footprint.
Changes to government legislation and technology advances in boiler design has driven boiler designs to condense to ensure as much heat as possible is converted into useful heat for your home. By condensing, your boiler will ensure at least 90p in every £1 you spend on gas or oil will be converted into heat for your home comfort. With A-rated condensing boilers racking at least 90% efficiency ratings, compared to older boilers, which can convert just 60% of their fuel into heat.
Because A-rated condensing boilers use a third less fuel than older boilers, they cut your heating bills and CO2 emissions by a third - great for your savings and the planet!
Correct heating controls could save up to 17% of your heating bill on your existing boiler, or up to 40% if you buy a new one.
Keep your room thermostats set to between 18°C and 21°C and your hot water cylinder thermostat to 60°C (140F). And by lowering your room thermostats by just 1°C you could save yourself £40 a year!
The popular Combi boiler brands in 2016 remain the same as 2015, with Worcester, Vaillant and Ideal being market leaders. If you would prefer a Combi boiler from another manufacturer, then at Direct Heating Supplies you can also purchase models from Baxi, Potterton, Alpha, Glow Worm and Vokera which can also be considered due to their reliability and ErP compatibility.

Top tip: Make sure your boiler’s working properly. Get it serviced every year to ensure it heats your home the way it should.
When it comes to looking after your boiler, just like a car it is important to have it serviced to ensure its safety and efficiency. Even though boiler negligence can be dangerous and make it rather expensive to heat your home, it isn’t always at the forefront of everyone’s minds, with only a small percentage of people having their boiler serviced regularly.
Why should i have my boiler serviced?
1. Safety
Every year in the UK 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of broken and damaged gas appliances and boilers. (Top tip – for peace of mind keep a carbon monoxide alarm in the room your boiler is kept)
2. Save Money
Regular servicing of your boiler can help to improve efficiency, reliability and reduce heating bills.
3. Guarantee and Warranties
Many boiler warranties and guarantees require the boiler to receive an annual service, failure to do this can void your warranty or guarantee.
4. Save Money on Repairs
By having your boiler serviced regularly and maintaining it correctly you can save money in the long run as repair costs associated with boilers that aren’t serviced tend to be much higher than maintenance costs for those that are.
5. Law for Landlords
It is a legal requirement for Landlords to have boilers in commercial and rented properties serviced annually- a CP12 Inspection Certificate must be issued.

Boiler Plus Introduction :
In December 2016, the Government consulted on a range of policy proposals, collectively known as ‘Boiler Plus’, to give consumers more choice over the way they heat their homes and more control over their energy bills.
The new ‘Boiler Plus’ standards outlined here are designed to improve the way many people use energy in their homes by giving them greater choice, greater control, and tangible savings on their energy bills.
As part of the new ‘Boiler Plus’ Standards, Smart controls offering load compensation or weather compensation would be fully compliant with the new standard, as they would offer the same benefits listed above. Installations can also comply by using other varieties of smart thermostat, provided they offer both automation and optimisation.
- Automation is a function that allows the device to automatically control the heating system output in response to programmed demand or occupancy detection. Advanced examples detect where householders are, such as through sensor data or geolocation based on smart phone data. This means the heating system will not operate more than necessary when it isn’t needed, and if householders are away for an extended period the heating can be switched off remotely or automatically.
- Optimisation means the device calculates how long it takes the property to reach the desired comfort level, and times the system’s operation to minimise the amount of work it has to do. Usually it also modulates the output of the boiler in a similar way to load compensation, so as little fuel as possible is consumed.
